The 2009-2010 Johnson County United Way fund-raising campaign kick-off took take place on Thursday, August 27 at the County Courthouse Lawn. with an outside event on the lawn of the Courthouse. The weather was cool and the rain held off for a very enjoyable day for those in attendance.
Introduced by the Campaign Chairman Delbert Bodenhamer, Melissa Gower opened the ceremonies with the Star Spangled Banner. Chuck Appleton presented the High School Jazz Band who entertained the crowd with a variety of selections
A free lunch (donations were accepted) was provided, consisting of burgers, hot dogs, chips, sodas and/or water underwritten by Embarq and ice cream treats donated by DQ Grill & Chill. A group of employees from Embarq assisted the United Way board members in serving the crowd. KOKO radio with Marion Woods provided a live broadcast and Gary Grigsby from Central Band and Piano provided the necessary equipment for the event. Dave Rest provided lively interludes of music and Larry Keisker with a group of gentlemen provided some delightful sing-along which the crowd joining in.
Heart-touching testimonials were given by some clients from different agencies supported by the United Way. The majority of agencies supported were available to explain the services they provide to those attending the event.
Agencies with booths present to explaining their services to those in attendance were the American Red Cross, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Johnson County, Catholic Charities, Boy Scouts of America/Heart of America Council, Girl Scouts of Mid-Continent Council, Holden Sports Association, Johnson County Adult Literacy, Johnson County HELP, Legal Aid of Western Missouri, Pathways Behavioral HealthCare, Salvation Army of Warrensburg, Show Me-Christian Youth Home, Survival Adult Abuse Center, The Food Center, Warrensburg Parks for the 21st Century, Warrensburg/Holden Senior Centers, 4-H Assistance, and Warrensburg Parks for the 21st Century. |

Johnson County United Way Celebrity Waiter Kickoff.
Johnson County United Way Raises $7,719 at Celebrity Waiter Dinner. The Johnson County United Way and 26 celebrity waiters entertained over 200 guests at the Celebrity Waiter Dinner at the Johnson County Fairgrounds on September 12th; the seventh annual event. Food for the event was donated by
Sodexho along with dessert donated by Bi-Lo Country Mart. Use of the Youth building was donated to the JCUW by the Johnson County Fair Association.
After set-up assistance from agencies (The American Red Cross, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Johnson County, the Food Center, Survival Abuse, Show Me Christian Youth Home, board members and local volunteers), a Hospitality Hour was held beginning at 5:30 PM with guest being seated by representatives from the Red Cross, Survival and JCUW board members. Dinner was served promptly at 6 PM. Serving that many people is a challenge but the food was served quickly to all present by the celebrity waiters. They were aided by board members with assistance from the Cub Scouts, Legal Aid, Warrensburg Parks for the 21st Century, and several community volunteers. Kitchen help was provided by the Kingsville Recreation, Food Center, Show Me-Christian, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. During the dinner hour guests were entertained with music provided by the Country Ordaras. Celebrity Waiters for the year included Rep. David Pearce, State Senator 31st District; Denny Hoskins, State Representative 121st District; Scott Largent, State Representative 120th District; Mike McGhee, State Representative 122nd District; Linda Rankin filling in for Jacqueline Cook, 17th Judicial Presiding Circuit Judge; Sue Dodson, 17th Judicial Associate Judge; Mike Wagner, 17th Judicial Judge; Stephanie Elkins, Circuit Clerk; Nancy Jo Jennings, Public Administrator; Jan Jones, Recorder of Deeds; Jeff Terry, Warrensburg Mayor; Lloyd Stever, Kingsville Mayor; Lou Sharp, Bi-Lo Country Mart; Charlie Rutt and Linda Fischer, HELP Board Members; Barbara Carroll, City of Warrensburg; Scott Crist, President UMB Bank; Phil Shumard, Enersys and United Way Board Member; Kathy Loyd, Warrensburg Manor and United Way Board Member; JoAnn Alpert, Holden Chamber President; Pat Zvacek, Holden Community Leader; Deborah Orr, Warrensburg School Superintendent; Dennis Long, WWMC; Rosemary Olas filling in for the Warrensburg Senior Center and Melisa Gower; Julie Perron & Judy Jett, CMCCU; Diane Thompson, Deputy County Clerk; Courtney Cole, Morgansites.com; and Delbert Bodenhamer, United Way Campaign Chair
Delbert Bodenhamer, campaign chair, welcomed the guests and introduced Bob Lotspeich who has been the host emcee for the entire seven years the JCUW has held this event.
Of the $7,719.52 gross amount reported at the end of the evening from the dinner and activities, $3,619 of that amount was raised by tips to the celebrity waiters from their guests. Top celebrity waiters who won the chance to serve the first three tables at next year’s event were Delbert Bodenhamer with $679 in tips; Lou Sharp with $469 and Representative David Pearce $425. Next runner up was Dennis Long with $240 in tips.
As part of the evening’s entertainment, guests also received tickets to the Johnson County Rodeo being held. |

Johnson County United Way Annual Chili Cook-Off.
The Johnson County United Way and their agencies will host the 17th annual chili cook-off on November 14. The chili's ranged from a vegetarian chili to those that serve baked potatoes and hot dogs to compliment their chili. Johnson County Adult Literacy chili will attempt to retained it’s title of Champion Chili but has been seriously challenged by Catholic Charities early in the planning stages of the cook-off.
Agency chili sign-ups will be posted as they become known. It will be an evening of good food and a tremendous supply of sweets to be auctioned off such as homemade cakes, pies, cookies, breads and candy along with other interesting items as many participants bring more than just sweets. The auction of items takes place several times during the evening to allow guests to take advantage of items without having to spend the entire evening waiting. The auctions take place at 5 and 6 PM
