Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Johnson County United Way?

The United of Johnson County is a county-wide non-profit organization founded in 1964 to raise funds for agencies that provide human services.  Committed to providing organized leadership, direction and support in working with the citizens of our county to help improve the quality of life by identifying, evaluating and supporting and/or funding human service needs and programs.

Why aren't some of the Johnson County United Way agencies shown in the Combined Federal Campaign booklet?

We are a federation within the Combined Federal Campaign. Because some of our agencies are affiliated with another Federation already a part of the Combined Federal Campaign, they are ineligible to be shown in our listing.  They do, however, receiving funding as part of the Johnson County United Way from undesignated monies donated to us.  If you are participating through the Combined Federal Campaign and wish your funds to go to a Johnson County United Way supported agency that is not shown in the Combined Federal Campaign booklet, we ask you to donate to the Johnson County (MO) United Way (agency 18576) in the Combined Federal Campaign and send a copy of your pledge card showing your pledge to us and ask us to ensure your donation is designated to the agency(s) you wish to support.  We will honor your request.   If, however, you donate to an agency that is not part of the Johnson County United Way federation, the funds will go to that federation and not to us.  The agencies affected by this ruling in the Combined Federal Campaign are: the American Red Cross, Children's Mercy Hospital, Legal Aid of Western Missouri, Boy Scouts of America (Heart of America Council), and the Girl Scouts of Mid-Continent Council.

Other agencies not qualifying for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign due to technicalities are:  Show-Me Christian Youth Home, University of Missouri Health Services-Heart and Cancer Care/Research, HOPE Coalition, Centerview Recreation, Kingsville Recreation, and 4-H Assistance Fund.  If you would like an explanation on any of these agencies and why they are not included in the Combined Federal Campaign, please contact our office at (660) 747-5174 or our Executive Secretary at (660) 909-5776 for additional information.  If you wish your donation to go to them you may follow the same procedures as shown above, donating to the Johnson County United Way and sending us your pledge card and instructions on where you would like your donations to go.

What is the Meaning of the United Way symbol?

The United Way logo is very visible. It is displayed at day-care centers, health-care facilities, neighborhood human-service organizations, and on United Way products. But what does it mean? The message is simple, but universal:
  • Hope For Better Tomorrow

The rainbow overhead, emerging from the hand to shelter the figure, represents hope for a better tomorrow.

  • Care About All People

The center image, based on the universal symbol of mankind, is cradled by the helping hand. It indicates that United Way cares about all people, everywhere.

  • Support For Local Communities

The bottom is a helping hand symbolizing United Way's support of services and programs that in turn support the people in local communities.
