2008-2009 Campaign

Plans are well underway for our 2008-2009 campaign and we would like to advise you of these dates. We are very excited about the campaign and anticipate a very successful fund-raising drive. Our goal is $215,000 which is what our agencies say they need to provide the services necessary for Johnson County. Our campaign is scheduled to officially begin on August 21 and end on November 1. Listed below are activities that have been scheduled:

Thursday,

August 21

11:00 AM-1:30 PM

County Courthouse Lawn

Johnson County Community United Way Kick-Off.  The 2008-2009 Johnson County United Way fund-raising campaign kick-off faced inclement weather but the board weighed their choices and decided to go for an outside event on the lawn of the Courthouse.  Drops fell occasionally but those attending enjoyed good food, excellent entertainment and providing the United Way with the start of a campaign which they hope will raise $215,000 of needed funds to assist the 27 agencies they support.

Heart-touching testimonials were given by Judi Crawford of Show-Me Christian Youth Home who related that she had come to Show-Me as a tiny babe and lived their all her years as a youth and has now returned to serve as an employee and give back some of what she had received. Many additional testimonials were from Heart of America Boy Scouts; Children’s Mercy Hospital by two families that have received care there; the Salvation Army; and Legal Aid of Western Missouri with two client cases where legal aid had intervened and provided assistance where one client had help getting a bill paid by insurance and another to avoid eviction.  Continuing were Survival Adult Abuse Center, W-ILS (West Central Independent Living Solutions), the Senior Centers, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Johnson County, Johnson County Adult Literacy, Mid-Continent Girl Scouts, the Food Center, Pathways, Johnson County HELP and a 4-Her relating where assistance provided through United Way funds allowed her opportunities she would never have been able to achieve..

Embarq, as a community leader, provided a $1,000 donation to the JCUW to underwrite part of the cost of the food for the lunch  and Embarq employees participated in the event, assisting with set-up, food preparation, serving, and clean-up.  In addition DQ Grill & Chill provided chocolate, cherry and butterscotch Dilly Bars.  KOKO radio with Marion Woods did a live broadcast and Gary Grigsby from Central Band and Piano kept the equipment dry and provided the sound system and fill-in music.

Pace-setter donations announced show the campaign at $49,452.30 or almost one-fifth of the campaign goal to date with many corporate campaigns just beginning.

Agencies with booths explaining their services to those in attendance were American Red Cross, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Johnson County, Catholic Charities, Children's Mercy Hospital, Boy Scouts of America/Heart of America Council, Girl Scouts of Mid-Continent Council, Holden Sports Association, HOPE Coalition, Johnson County Adult Literacy, Johnson County HELP, Legal Aid of Western Missouri, Pathways Behavioral HealthCare, Salvation Army of Warrensburg, Show Me-Christian Youth Home, Survival Adult Abuse Center,  The Food Center, Warrensburg Parks for the 21st Century, Warrensburg/Holden Senior Centers, 4-H Assistance, West Central Independent Living Solutions (WILS) and Warrensburg Parks for the 21st Century..
